CRD Launches Rain Barrel 101 Campaign on Sustainable U

Victoria, BC –- The Capital Regional District’s Stormwater, Harbours and Watersheds program (SHWP) is launching a new campaign to promote the sustainable management of rainwater in order to protect watersheds throughout the region. As part of the campaign, the CRD will be giving away 20 rain barrels in 20 days to promote rainwater harvesting in the region.

“This pilot project campaign will offer residents a great way to learn more about stormwater management and practice good rainwater management on their own properties” said Glenn Harris, Senior Manager, Environmental Protection.

Using social media, residents will be encouraged to share sustainable behaviour tips; participants will be entered into a draw for one of 20 rain barrels, which will be given away after the campaign closes on June 10.

Rainwater harvesting involves the collection and storage of rainwater from downspouts for future use on lawns and gardens. Collection of rainwater helps slow stormwater runoff and encourage natural infiltration, and provides a complement to other natural gardening techniques, such as going pesticide free, building healthy soils, using native plants and practicing water conservation.

The Capital Region receives approximately 1000 mm of precipitation annually, with the majority of rainfall occurring in the fall, winter and spring months. SHWP promotes rainwater harvesting as one of many Low Impact Development (LID) techniques for sustainable rainwater management.
