HEALTH SERVICES FUNDING - PREAMBLE
INTRODUCTION TO A FACT SHEET SERIES
There is a growing concern about the future of health services on Saturna, and in particular about the Medical Clinic and the funding that supports it. The Saturna community needs to address this issue so that we can proceed into the future assured that our Medical Clinic will be there when we need it.

EMERGENCY PREPARATION APPRAISAL
by Dawn Wood, Saturna Coordinator
Situations such as earthquakes, tsunamis or fire can leave us homeless; thus we have the recommendation to pack some bins with emergency supplies that are kept separate from the main dwelling. Summer into fall is a good time to check one’s emergency storage bins – desirable at least every few years! I recently set aside my procrastination for this task; here are my discoveries.
Have you ever had visitors to Saturna who have said that they really would like to move to this amazing island, perhaps with a young family, in order to escape the Big City? How many times have you heard young people say that they would like to set up a business here but lack the experience -- even sometimes to know what questions need to be addressed before they can do so? Even existing business owners on Saturna have been heard to say that they could use a little advice and coaching on how to take their businesses to a new level.

POSSIBLE MARINE EVACUATION SITES FOR SATURNA
By Dawn Wood, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator
In case of wildfire or other emergencies, please remember that only private roads or driveways provide access to beaches and water access on private property. When possible, request permission for emergency use. Maintain an awareness of high and low tides. In ordered evacuations, Coast Guard boats will be patrolling the island and Parks Canada can use its landing craft vessel.

THE EMERGENCY & DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TEAMS ON SATURNA
by Dawn Wood, Coordinator
Besides the volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders of SIR (Saturna Island Rescue), there are many other residents trained to help out under certain emergency circumstances. This first week of May is a time to acknowledge what they do and who they are.
